“Carpets and rugs keep your home snug. They keep warmth from escaping the room: crucial for bathroom tiles, especially when it comes to the chillier months. And they protect your floor from chafing. Mold and mildew are a common problem, however. The underside of carpets and rugs are especially susceptible. Here’s how to keep them mold- and mildew-free: (1) Clean regularly — Take out and clean your carpets and rugs on a regular basis, especially for items in high-traffic or high-humidity areas of the home. Allenrapidry also shared other ways to make sure that carpets in the home remain mold-free.

“A carpet that is meant to be a comfortable place to lay down with a blanket and pillow to watch a movie, or where a baby learns to walk or crawl is often instead a source of hidden ‘creepy crawlies’ and unsuspecting ailments. Without getting rid of these common critters AND their ‘left overs’ you may be leaving your family subject to airborne illness, skin irritations and sinus irritations that contribute to sneezing, snoring and asthma. Plus you’ll have a carpet that seems to never get clean. But you can have a clean, comfortable carpet that looks like new, smells great, is easy to maintain and is safe… The first step is to make sure and vacuum your carpet at least once a week before the pollutants have a chance to embed in your carpet.   If kids or pets are present in the house then carpeted areas may need to be tended to multiple times a week. To prevent rapid dirt accumulation, have house guests remove shoes before entering the home.”

“Hair pads are difficult to dry, especially under a carpet. My sense is that it is the hair pad that is giving off this odor. Consider pulling the carpet up in several areas and checking the pad. It may have to be disposed of and replaced with a synthetic pad. You may lay a sheet of 6-mil plastic on the bare concrete floor to create a vapor retarder before laying the new pad. If you find that the carpeting is dry and does not have mold on its back, it should be OK to reuse it.”
