Mold and mildew are a common problem, however. The underside of carpets and rugs are especially susceptible. Here’s how to keep them mold- and mildew-free: (1) Clean regularly — Take out and clean your carpets and rugs on a regular basis, especially for items in high-traffic or high-humidity areas of the home. Take note to clean as instructed by the manufacturer. Don’t wash items meant for dry-cleaning. Scrub with a soft brush if needed, and hand-wash items made with sensitive material.”

“A carpet that is meant to be a comfortable place to lay down with a blanket and pillow to watch a movie, or where a baby learns to walk or crawl is often instead a source of hidden ‘creepy crawlies’ and unsuspecting ailments. Without getting rid of these common critters AND their ‘left overs’ you may be leaving your family subject to airborne illness, skin irritations and sinus irritations that contribute to sneezing, snoring and asthma. Plus you’ll have a carpet that seems to never get clean. But you can have a clean, comfortable carpet that looks like new, smells great, is easy to maintain and is safe… The first step is to make sure and vacuum your carpet at least once a week before the pollutants have a chance to embed in your carpet.   If kids or pets are present in the house then carpeted areas may need to be tended to multiple times a week. To prevent rapid dirt accumulation, have house guests remove shoes before entering the home.”

“Hair pads are difficult to dry, especially under a carpet. My sense is that it is the hair pad that is giving off this odor. Consider pulling the carpet up in several areas and checking the pad. It may have to be disposed of and replaced with a synthetic pad. You may lay a sheet of 6-mil plastic on the bare concrete floor to create a vapor retarder before laying the new pad. If you find that the carpeting is dry and does not have mold on its back, it should be OK to reuse it.”

You and your family could already be inhaling mold regularly even before you know or discover the existence of molds in your home.

In its website, US Air Purifiers say you could already be ill due to regularly inhaling molds even before you could see the physical signs of mold infestation in your residence.

“According to immunotoxicologist (mold expert) Dr. Jack Thrasher, mold may be present in 25 percent of homes in America and in 40 percent of schools — both places where children are likely to spend the majority of their time. Health problems associated with toxic mold inhalation are various and wide-ranging, from sore throat, rhinitis, muscle aches and fatigue to more alarming symptoms like erratic behavior, memory loss and pulmonary hemorrhage. The particles that are responsible for these symptoms are called mycotoxins, and they enter the body through the nose and mouth during inhalation and even occasionally through the eyes. They then make their way to the lungs, other organs and even the brain and take up residence there. One of the particularly menacing aspects of mycotoxins is that they are able to multiply in the body while simultaneously suppressing the immune system’s response, leaving the body defenseless against their attack.”

“Although most molds can cause some health problems, many do not harm healthy people if the exposure is moderate. However, black mold or toxic mold is a serious concern. This kind of mold is much harder to get rid of to the point that a home infested with it often has to be destroyed. Mold samples must be tested to know whether black mold is the issue. Symptoms of exposure include coughing blood, bloody nose, dizziness, nausea and anemia. If left unchecked or if a child or allergy sufferer is exposed to black mold, the effects can even include death.”

It may be visible (on the exterior of walls) but it can also hide behind walls and underneath floors, where it’s difficult to detect or remove. If your home has experienced a flood, it’s best to call in a mold remediation company to inspect and eliminate any traces of mold if there are any.”
